Urban space, the female subject and poetry are the key words in the cinema of Marina Spada, a Milanese filmmaker active on the Italian cinematic scene since the late Nineties and a professor of cinema at the Film, Television and New Media School in Milan. She has initially self-produced her films and, together with other women directors such as Alina Marazzi, she has created in Milan a pole of vibrant cinematic activity. Marina Spada is one of the most interesting filmmakers of the New Italian cinema. She has gained international reputation thanks to her feature films and documentaries. Among her most recent and critically acclaimed films, we can remember:  Come l'ombra / As the Shadow (2006), screened at the Venice Film Festival that year and also in several international film festivals, (Toronto, London, San Paolo, Parigi, Dublin, Calcutta, among others), and the movie, Il mio domani / My tomorrow (2011). On Tuesday February 17, from 5:30 to 7:00 in the Forum Room in Lamont Library, we would like to show her documentary on Italian poet Antonia Pozzi, Poesia che mi guardi / Poetry, you see me (2009).

This documentary offers a portrait of Milan, the city where Antonia Pozzi was born in 1912 and where she lived until she committed suicide in 1938, spanning from the 1930s to today. In the word of Laura Di Bianco: "Poesia is not merely a portrait of Pozzi, but also an autobiographical film in which the filmmaker reflects on her love for poetry, on the meaning of her own art, and on her role as an artist" (Di Bianco, 2013) . Marina Spada will be present and will participate in a Q&A session after the screening. The documentary will be in Italian with English subtitles.
