'To Leave or Stay?' History, Politics, and Existential Choice in the Films of István Szabó
István Szabó, the first Hungarian director to win an Academy Award for best foreign film (Mephisto, 1981), remains one of Hungary’s leading filmmakers. Susan Suleiman will discuss a recurring theme in his films: the question of individual choice in lives that are determined by events beyond the individual’s control.
