Harvard University, Boylston Hall Fong Auditorium (Cambridge, MA)
ORGANIZERS: Elvira Di Fabio (Harvard University), Walter Valeri (The Boston Conservatory), in collaboration with the Director of The Education Office of the Consulate General of Italy in Boston, Domenico Savio Teker .
DESCRIPTION: This symposium addresses the theory and practice of foreign language study in partnership with the visual and dramatic arts. Proposed best practices underscore translingual and transcultural objectives that lead to higher-level critical thinking and increased aesthetic literacy. This methodology of multidimensional cultural integration encourages our students to move, physically and metaphorically, through doorways into spaces they may have never explored before.
The morning session, which is free and open to the general public, features keynote speaker, Prof. Colleen Ryan, Associate Professor of Italian and Director of Italian Language Instruction at Indiana University, and author of Dramatic Interactions: Teaching Languages, Literatures, and Cultures through Theater. Theoretical Approaches and Classroom Practices.(2011), and Set the Stage! Teaching Italian through Theater. Theories, Methods, and Practices (2010).
The afternoon session, free and open to registered participants only, features practical applications of these methodologies.
Registered participants will receive a certificate of participation for Professional Development Points.
N.B. Parking in Harvard Square is nearly impossible. We strongly suggest you take public transportation.
