"When reading about the traditional history of colonial Brazil, one might be under the impression that there were few women living in that land for over three centuries. Women have been consistently erased from Brazilian history for centuries and, as time passes, the challenges of recovering those female names and histories become greater. Since 2017, Professors Maria Clara Paixão de Sousa and Vanessa Martins do Monte, from the University of São Paulo, have been leading the research project Mulheres na América Portuguesa [Women in Portuguese America], with the objective of finding, organizing, and editing archival sources about those women from the past. They have already published documents about almost 150 women and have much more to come. In this conference, they will discuss the objectives of this project and present some of the most thrilling results of their innovative archival research."
