Prof. Hannah Frydman has been awarded an honorable mention for the 2024-25 Laurence Wylie Prize in French Cultural Studies for her book, Between the Sheets: Sexuality, Classified Advertising, and the Moral Threat to Press Freedom in France (Cornell UP, 2025).

Please see the committee’s citation below:

"At the juncture of textual and historical studies, Hannah Frydman’s inventive book traces the complex interplays between sex, mobility, and morality in the modern French press. Equally attentive to normative regimes as to subversive practices, marrying close readings with attention to moral and political economies, Between the Sheets is a methodological tour de force."

Created in 1995 to honor the memory of Laurence Wylie, Professor of French Civilization at Harvard University, the Laurence Wylie Prize in French Cultural Studies is awarded every second year to an outstanding book in French social or cultural studies. The prize is administered by the faculty of NYU’s Institute of French Studies. The members of this year's Prize committee were Jennifer Boittin (UNC-Chapel Hill), Anny-Dominique Curtius (University of Iowa), and Jeff Horn (Bellevue College); Stéphane Gerson (NYU) served as non-voting chair.
