Andrea Garza Erdmann
Research Interests: Contemporary and 20th Century Latin American literature; immigrant and refugee narratives; human rights; race and gender studies.
Andrea Garza is a PhD candidate in the Romance Languages and Literature Department. Her dissertation focuses on contemporary Mexican literature regarding forced disappearances and femicides. She proposes new modes of reading that allow the reader to engage with violence without normalizing it. Furthermore, she stipulates these forms of reading can strengthen our ethical ties to each other. The secret is to allow oneself to be haunted. Andrea’s research interests also include oral histories, Cuir and decolonial theory, testimonio, immigration, media studies, and horror. Andrea has a master’s degree in Romance Languages and Literature from Harvard, and a master’s degree in Latin American Studies from Stanford.
