John Mayhew, University of Kansas, "Lorca's Modernist Self-Fashioning"

Date:

Tuesday, October 13, 2015, 5:30pm

Location:

Instituto Cervantes at Harvard, 2 Arrow Street, 4th Fl

Professor Mayhew will read Lorca's self-creation as a literary artist from the perspective of the postmodern "death of the subject." The result will be to locate this questioning or dissolution of subjectivity in modernism itself (rather than in its later manifestations) and to re-situate Lorca in relation to his modernist contemporaries, like Kafka, Borges, and Pessoa. His approach presents a challenge to the biographical imperative of Lorca studies, which has prevented this wider view of how he fits into the literature of this period.
